Guide to Mexico

Some tips and tricks to make sure you have the best possible time in Mexico.

Once you’ve learned these by heart, check out the Culinary Guide to improve your stay in Mexico even more!

General matters

  • See travel preparations for information on Flights, Visas, Vaccinations, Payment methods, and SIM cards.
  • Don’t expect people to speak English unless you are in a touristy area.
  • The water from the tap is not drinkable. Unfortunately, this applies to every part of Mexico you visit.
  • When you order a coffee(-based drink) with milk, you will often be asked what type of milk you want (“Qué tipo de leche quieres?”), which is a question that has confused some Dutchies in the past, so just say “normal” (i.e. whole cow’s milk).
  • It will be rain season in Mexico City and nearby areas. What does this mean? Always be prepared.
  • As tempting as the smell might be, do not eat streetfood from stalls as the sanitary conditions are not ideal. Eating at proper restaurants should be fine.
  • Be sure to always carry cash with you as certain service providers don’t take card (Taxi’s specially). Also note that Maestro (PIN) cards are not supported

Safety tips

  • If you plan on doing a road trip: Use toll roads when possible and avoid driving alone or at night. In many states, police presence and emergency services are extremely limited outside the state capital or major cities.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches, jewellery or flashing around your phone.
  • Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs
  • Do not travel to the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas. Driving through Chiapas is also discouraged.
  • Whenever you can, use Uber or Cabify to get around. Public transportation, including the Mexico City subway, is not always safe.
