This region is located in the south eastern part of Mexico and consists of three states: Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo. It is one of the most visited regions in Mexico since it has a lot of things to offer such as beautiful cenotes, caves, colonial cities, Mayan ruins, paradisiac beaches, thrilling nightlife and delicious food.
How to get there
The easiest way to get there is fly to the Cancun airport since it is really well connected with other areas in Mexico, Europe and the U.S.
What to do
- Mayan ruins: Becan, Calakmul, Chichen Itza, Coba, Cuzama, Ednza, Kabah, Mayapan, Palenque, Tulum and Uxmal. Chichen Itza, Tulum and Palenque are the most well-known ones.
- Party: Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun.
- Scuba Dive/ Snorkel: Cozumel, Cancun, Playa del Carmen.
- Ecological parks/Nature reserves: Xcaret, Xel-Ha Garrafon, Isla Contoy, Las Coloradas, Rio Lagartos.
- Cenotes: Cenotes are sinkholes and caves that are interconnected. They have cool cave formations where you can scuba dive or swim. La Ruta de los Cenotes is a “tourist corridor” located in the states of Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
- Experiences with animals: Swim with whalesharks in Holbox Island. Snorkel with turtles in Akumal. The ecological parks are also a great site to see some wildlife.
- Colonial cities/Towns: Merida, Valladolid and Izamal.
- Beaches: All beaches along this area are amazing. You can choose to either stay in a big all-inclusive hotel in Cancun or go to less known places such as: Mahahual, Holbox and Bacalar. Both Tulum and Riviera Maya are good options since they offer both settings.
How to get around
The easiest way to travel around is to rent a car however keep in mind that Mexicans get driver licenses without taking a driving test so it can be a bit hectic. Buses are also a good way to get around through the following companies: ADO, Estrella de Oro and ETN.
What to eat
Cochinita Pibil, Poc Chuch, Huevos Motulenos, Pollo Motuleno, Sopa de Lima and Panuchos. Seafood is also really good in this region.
How to get to the wedding location from here
The easiest way is to fly from Cancun to Mexico City through one of the Budget Airlines: Volaris, Interjet or Viva Aereobus. You can drive all the way to Mexico City and/or the wedding location but bear in mind that the drive is more than 20 hours long.
Buses also travel to Mexico City however sometimes they are more expensive than the flights.
